Keshanta Sanskar & Godan Ritual
Why Choose Apna Reeti Riwaj
Product details
Why is this Sanskar Necessary?
According to Vedic Grihya Sutras, Keshanta Sanskar is performed around the age of 16 as an adolescent male encounters the onset of physical adulthood, manifested through the first appearance of facial hair (beard and moustache). Following the sacred thread ceremony (Upanayan), students historically preserved uncut hair and beard throughout early schooling; thus, this rite represents the first sacred tonsure of facial hair accompanied by ceremonial purification. Its primary spiritual objective is to help the youth harness physical and hormonal shifts, master self-restraint over sensory passions, and anchor profound moral discipline. The completion of this rite involves presenting a consecrated cow (or symbolic offering) to the mentor as Guru Dakshina, which is why it is scripturally referred to as the 'Godan Sanskar'.
Key Ritual Procedure:
Swasti Vachan & Discipline Sankalp: Formal Vedic pledge invoking divine grace for sensory control, mental focus, moral purity, and academic triumph.
Lord Ganesha & Kalash Sthapana: Initial invocations of Lord Ganesha and Varuna Dev to purify the space and ensure an obstacle-free ritual.
Navagraha & Acharya Pujan: Propitiating cosmic planetary forces for auspicious transition and revering the Acharya with traditional offerings.
Ceremonial Shodana & Keshanta Tonsure: Scriptural shaving of facial and head hair during an auspicious Muhurta amid Vedic chanting, followed by a sanctifying herb bath.
Sensory Purification & Renewed Vows: Re-affirming the vows of celibate student life (Brahmacharya), donning fresh cotton garments, and applying sanctified Chandan tilak.
Sacred Keshanta Hawan: Fire offerings using sacred Palash wood, pure cow ghee, black sesame, and barley with Vedic Medha and Brahmacharya mantras.
Godan (Cow Charity) Sankalp, Aarti & Visarjan Support: Resolving the traditional sacred cow donation (or consecrated symbolic equivalent) to the Acharya, Maha Aarti, and complete eco-friendly visarjan assistance.
